At Murphy Plastic Surgery we are constantly promoting the use of sunscreen to all of our patients so we love reading articles that help the public better understand the importance and must knows about sunscreen like the one in Men’s Journal for September 2010. The article titled “The False Security of Sunscreen” brings up some startling facts, fantastic reminders and helpful sun protection products.
One of the most startling facts in the report states that while most sunscreens protect against UVB rays 92% of them fail to block the suns UVA rays which penetrate deeper and are the cause of skin cancer. Another interesting fact for those of us living in the mile high city is that UV rays increase by 4% for every 1000 foot jump in elevation, so above 12,000 feet we double our UV exposure. The reflection of the sun off of water increases the intensity of UV rays by 50% and off snow increases the intensity of by 80%! While Dr. Murphy has always recommended that patients reapply sunscreen every hour while out enjoy our beautiful Colorado outdoors, it might be necessary to reapply every 30-40 minutes while in the water or on the slopes.
One of the rules we tell patients to follow when looking for a sunscreen is to make sure it contains the ingredients zinc and titanium dioxide. The Men’s Journal article also recommends looking for the ingredient avobensone ormeroxyl sx. These ingredients are key to blocking both UVA and UVB rays. The article also recommends picking sunscreens without vitamin A and oxybenzone which have been linked to increased risk of tumors and DNA damage. You should also avoid sprays and powders, use an spf of 30 or higher and still get a healthy dose of vitamin D from the sun (15 minutes a day is about all you need!).
If you need an excuse to go shopping there are some fantasticly fun and protective products on the market now. Plain t-shirts can block 86% of the suns rays but brands like Columbia make shirts that can keep out 98% of the suns rays. Hats and sun glasses are always a must for outdoor play. Which is a perfect excuse to go out and buy the Oakley’s you’ve always wanted which can block 99% ov UVB and 95% of UVA rays. And check out www.uvsunsense.com for their sunsense wrist band. Apply lotion to the wrist band and as the band fades from orange to lavender you know it’s time to reapply. As always you can pick up the best in sunscreens from Murphy Plastic Surgery. Stop by our office in Englewood anytime, no appointment necessary or call to have your favorite sunscreen shipped.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
A Flat and well-toned abdomen is something many of us strive for through exercise and weight control. But regardless of effort, sometimes these methods cannot achieve our goals. Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. The most common causes of this include heredity, multiple pregnancies, prior surgeries or significant fluctuations in weight.
If you desire a tighter, flatter abdomen, then a tummy tuck may be appropriate procedure to help achieve your goals. In general, a tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin, and in most cases restores weakened or separated muscles. This creates an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer, often enhancing your body image and confidence.
Dr. Murphy often incorporates liposuction during this procedure to give the patient a more contoured figure with a very positive result. Liposuction can be done to the hips, flanks, thighs and buttock areas during the same procedure as the abdominoplasty for a minimal cost.
The best way to learn how a tummy tuck can help fulfill your personal goals is a consultation with Dr. Murphy.

Fat grafting has been a technique used by plastic surgeons for years for correcting small areas of contouring such as facial wrinkles. Only recently has the idea of using a persons own fat to augment the breasts become a topic and procedure in plastic surgery. For years the American Society for Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recommended that fat grafting to the breast be avoided and until recently most physicians did not perform this procedure. The major fear of this procedure being that the fat is difficult to distinguish from calcification and tumors of the breast on a mammogram. Other complications like the formation of cysts, the newly grafted tissue dying and breast deformity were also factors in the ASPS’s recommendation. And since the longevity of this procedure is unknown, additional complications and subsequent need for treatments is unknown as well.
Today there are newer technologies available to plastic surgeons to perform fat grafting procedures and to radiologists for detecting breast cancer, which is probably why we have recently seen news and articles on physicians experimenting with using fat grafting for breast surgeries. Although this procedure is gaining acceptance by physicians and patients the ASPS 2009 guidelines still state that such a procedure is not recommended. All in all additional data and research is needed in the area of fat grafting for use in breast augmentation before this becomes a safe and effective procedure.
Information in this article was taken from the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, Volume 30, Number 3, May/June 2010 from the Review Article “Fat Grafting to the Breast and Adipose-Derived Stem Cells: Recent Scientific Consensus and Controversy” by Hiroshi Mizuno, MD, PhD and Hiko Hyakusoku, MD, PhD.

Summer Surgery Special
20% OFF Dr. Murphy’s surgical fee during July and August.
Procedure must be performed by August 31st, 2010.
Liposuction
Liposuction has been one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed over the past few years in not only Dr. Murphy’s practice but all over the country. Liposuction is very effective in reducing localized fat deposits, those problem areas you just can’t seem to get rid of. In some instances liposuction can be performed alone but it can also be combined with other procedures such as with a tummy tuck or breast surgery.
Ideal candidates for liposuction are adults of any age within 30% of their ideal weight and with firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone. Patients may not see much weight loss with liposuction but will notice a change in shape and size. Clothes tend to fit and feel better after liposuction procedures
Please call to learn more about liposuction and our Summer Surgery Special or to schedule your complimentary consultation.
Liposuction can be performed to the following areas:
- Abdomen and waist
- Cheeks, Chin, Neck
- Breast/Chest area
- Back
- Hips
- Thighs & Knees
- Buttocks

Asclera is the new FDA approved treatment for spider veins. Spider veins most often occur in the legs but can show up in other areas of the body. These unsightly veins most often occur in women and can increase during pregnancy and as women age. It is thought that jobs with prolonged standing can increase spider veins as well.
Treatments with Asclera will be more tolerable, have fewer side effects and cost less than any other spider vein treatment currently on the market. Asclera should be available at our office by July 14, 2010!

Adding Fat Injections to Traditional Facelifts Delivers Improved Results
Fat injections reach as far back as 100 years and gained momentum when it became used to treat patients that had too much fat removed through liposuction.
Simultaneous facelift and fat injections can produce a better result than either technique by itself. Fat injections are artistically powerful and add a healthier, more fit and youthful appearance. These injections are particularly helpful in patients with poorly supported lower eyelids and support issues in other areas. Adding volume with fat injections works best when sagging skin and underlying tissues have been repositioned. Without the correction of sagging skin fat grafting alone can result in an overly large and unnatural appearing face. Dr. Murphy has been using the technique of adding fat to unsupported areas of the face along with facelifts for many years with high patient satisfaction.
In addition to filling in hollow areas fat grafting can also be used to plump lips and correct other small imperfections.
Please call for a complimentary consultation with Dr. Murphy to discuss your options for this procedure.
