Adding Fat Injections to Traditional Facelifts Delivers Improved Results

Fat injections reach as far back as 100 years and gained momentum when it became used to treat patients that had too much fat removed through liposuction.

Simultaneous facelift and fat injections can produce a better result than either technique by itself.  Fat injections are artistically powerful and add a healthier, more fit and youthful appearance.  These injections are particularly helpful in patients with poorly supported lower eyelids and support issues in other areas.  Adding volume with fat injections works best when sagging skin and underlying tissues have been repositioned.  Without the correction of sagging skin fat grafting alone can result in an overly large and unnatural appearing face.  Dr. Murphy has been using the technique of adding fat to unsupported areas of the face along with facelifts for many years with high  patient satisfaction.

Here at Murphy Plastic Surgery we usually recommend receiving Botox Cosmetic injections every three to four months to treat lines and wrinkles on your forehead, frown lines and crows feet.  But now a new study has come out of Oregon Health and Science University stating that less frequent doses of Botox can be effective.  The study followed 50 women between the ages of 30 and 50 who received regular Botox injections every four months for two years.  They found that after those regular treatments the frequency of the injections can change to every six months and still achieve good results.  So essentially after two years patients can cut their cost for Botox Cosmetic in half!

The study also demonstrated that Botox Cosmetic treatments can prevent wrinkles.  These patients that started the Botox treatments in their 30’s, 40’s and even 50’s were able to prevent wrinkles from forming and effectively eliminate existing wrinkles.

Did you know that just about any physician can call themselves a cosmetic surgeon?  There are weekend courses offered all over the country which supposedly teach physicians how to do liposuction and breast augmentations.  That is why it is more important than ever to know how to find and choose a properly trained plastic surgeon.  Choosing a doctor who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), as Dr. Murphy is, is the first step.  Members of the ASPS must be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.  They must also have had at least 6 years of surgical experience with 3 years specifically in plastic surgery and operate only in accredited medical facilities.  Members must also adhere to a strict code of ethics and fulfill continuing education requirements including patient safety techniques.

In addition to being an ASPS member surgeon you need to find a surgeon that has hospital privileges to perform the procedure you want.  Dr. Murphy not only has privileges to perform plastic surgery at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado, he is Chief of Plastic Surgery there as well.  If the physician is performing procedures in a private surgical facility you want to be sure that the facility is accredited by an organization like The American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF).  Dr. Murphy’s private surgical suite in Englewood is accredited by this organization and must pass inspections as well as reviews by his peers in the plastic surgery community.

You should know how long the plastic surgeon you are meeting with has been in practice and how many procedures they have done.  Dr. Murphy has been in practice for 18 years now and performing procedures at his current location for the last 14 years.   On average he performs around 40 cosmetic procedures a month.

Facial Implants

This month we would like to discuss facial implants, in particular cheek and chin implants.  One of the most attractive facial features on a person are full rounded cheek bones, which can soften overall appearance.  A deficient cheek structure can make your face appear drawn and gaunt.  It may give the appearance of heaviness in the lower face and an aged look in the area under the eye.  Adding cheek implants can create fuller cheekbones and in some cases add fullness to the areas beneath the cheek bone.  Cheek implants are an excellent option for the patient that consistently has dermal fillers placed in the cheek area every 9-12 months.

Chin augmentation is widely seen for several different types of patients.  Some men want this procedure to help pronounce the chin and give it more definition.  If desired Dr. Murphy can add a cleft indent to emphasize the chin.  Typically we see females that have a recessive chin or a chin with no shape.  They desire a more round, full, feminine look to balance their overall facial appearance.

Facial implant procedures require very little down time for the patient and the are also very affordable.  They can be done under local anesthesia  with or without sedation and only take one to one and half hours..
