Facial Implants

This month we would like to discuss facial implants, in particular cheek and chin implants.  One of the most attractive facial features on a person are full rounded cheek bones, which can soften overall appearance.  A deficient cheek structure can make your face appear drawn and gaunt.  It may give the appearance of heaviness in the lower face and an aged look in the area under the eye.  Adding cheek implants can create fuller cheekbones and in some cases add fullness to the areas beneath the cheek bone.  Cheek implants are an excellent option for the patient that consistently has dermal fillers placed in the cheek area every 9-12 months.

Chin augmentation is widely seen for several different types of patients.  Some men want this procedure to help pronounce the chin and give it more definition.  If desired Dr. Murphy can add a cleft indent to emphasize the chin.  Typically we see females that have a recessive chin or a chin with no shape.  They desire a more round, full, feminine look to balance their overall facial appearance.

Facial implant procedures require very little down time for the patient and the are also very affordable.  They can be done under local anesthesia  with or without sedation and only take one to one and half hours..

We’ve all heard that cigarette smoking can cause heart disease and cancer but it can also negatively impact wound healing and post-operative complications after surgery. A report in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal from 2003 reviewed 132 patients having abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) surgery and showed wound healing problems in 47.9% of smokers versus 14.8% in non-smokers.

Cigarettes contain nicotine and carbon monoxide which constrict blood vessels and decreases red blood cells ability to carry oxygen. These factors can lead to increased problems with anesthesia and decreased blood supply to the skin and deeper tissues. Post-surgical risks for smokers include poor or delayed wound healing, increased risk of infection, longer bruising period, skin loss, hypertrophic or keloid scarring, increased risk of pulmonary problems and tissue breakdown.

Dr. Murphy recommends stopping smoking for a minimum of two weeks before and after any procedure. This two week cessation is a minimum but it can rid your body of the majority of nicotine in it and is a positive step towards ensuring a healthy recovery.

Lip Enhancement

One of the more complex challenges in plastic and cosmetic surgery is the perioral region.  Injectables such as Juvederm , Prevelle Silk or Collagen are temporary, lasting anywhere from 3-9 months.  Although these dermal fillers are excellent products patients have to return to have these treatments performed periodically to meet their personal desires and expectations.

Dr. Murphy is excited to introduce a new facial implant to our office.  Perma-Lip facial implant is made of a soft silicone elastomer using an injection molding process to produce a naturally contoured & smooth surface that cannot rupture or deflate.  This is a FDA approved device and has undergone extensive clinical testing to ensure it’s safety and efficacy.  Based upon studies and patient satisfaction levels the Perma-Lip implant is an excellent solution for permanent lip augmentation.  During an exam by Dr. Murphy the proper size would be determined and discussed with the patient.  This procedure can be performed in our office under a local anesthesia.  The procedure takes approximately one hour and normal activity may be resumed the following day.

Facial Enhancement

There was an interesting article recently in the September 2009 issue of Plastic Surgery News by Jim Leonardo.  Apparently a group of 23 women from China made a trek to South Korea to receive plastic surgery.  All of the women, ranging in age from 23 to 54, wore big hats and sunglasses and some still hand bandages and sutures on their return trip home.  The border officials in China became suspicious and didn’t accept their passports.  “We saw them looking different and with bandages and stiches here and there” an airpot official said.  “We had to compare their uncorrected parts with their photos very carefully.”  Eventuallly, after detaining the women for several hours until each ones identity could be verified, they were released and asked to renew their passports immediately.
