There was a great article on Latisse in the June 2009 issue of Allure magazine. Calling Latisse a breakthrough formula that delivers. Latisse is used once a day like a liquid eyeliner to grow eyelashes thicker, longer and darker. One doctor in the article is quoted as saying “This is a huge breakthrough. I’ve used it and several members of my family have used it . . . and it’s really made a difference.”
Latisse was discovered as a side effect to the glaucoma drug, Lumigan. Researchers zeroed in on Lumigan’s active ingredient the prostiglandin bimatoprost and found that it really does work in lengthening and thickening eyelashes. The Allure magazine article is quoted as saying at the end of Lattise’s 16 week clinical study, 78% of patients averaged a 25% gain in lash length, an 18% increase in darkness and a 106% increase in fullness. Allergan, the maker’s of Latisse, hold the patent on the use of prostiglandin in eyelash-growth products. It is the only FDA approved eyelash growth product and can only be obtained through a physician.
Most users will notice a difference in 8 weeks, with full results visible in 16 weeks. Eyelash growth will eventually reach a plateau and if you discontinue the product lashes will return to their normal growth cycle. The article mentions that doctor’s are already experimenting with ways to stretch Latisse’s benefit, like once you’ve reached your desired eyelash length you can cut use back to every other day or every third day.
The Allure magazine article mentions some other nonprescription products that are still on the market but doctors are wary of these. One doctor is quoted as saying “they may have some capability, but they just haven’t been studied in a controlled fashion.” And another says “Trying these products may have been one thing when you didn’t have a good, FDA approved option but now you do.”
