I thought that this was an interesting look at attitudes regarding plastic surgery, particularly as it applies to the younger generation—
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) recently has released results of a survey showing that men and women ages 18 to 24 have the highest approval rating for cosmetic surgery. According to the survey, which polled 1,000 teens and young adults ages 18 and above, 69 percent of respondents are in favor of cosmetic surgery — a 7 percent increase from a similar survey performed in 2006.
The survey shows that among all Americans, 78 percent of women and 79 percent of men say they would not be embarrassed if others knew they had cosmetic surgery. Also, 32 percent of women would consider cosmetic surgery as compared with 20 percent of men.
Other findings:
- A significant majority of Americans (74 percent) say their attitude toward cosmetic surgery has not changed in the past five years, though 16 percent say their attitude is more favorable.
- Men and women with children in their households are more likely to consider cosmetic surgery (29 percent), as compared with those without a child in their household (23 percent).
- Men and women are nearly equal in their approval of cosmetic surgery, with women showing a slightly lower (56 percent) approval rating than men (57 percent).
The study was commissioned by the ASAPS.
This is reflected in the patients I have ben seeing in my practice. Although facial plastic surgery is more common in the older generations I have been seeing many younger patients, in particular for breast augmentations and liposuction (not to mention nose surgery and ear tucks, and buttock enhancements).
